The Ruby Company

Design Development

Project Description

Established in 1966, The Ruby Company is one of the nation’s largest suppliers of fresh produce to grocery chains, restaurants, and distributors. As the company entered a new chapter under the leadership of a new generation, it required a digital presence that reflected both its scale and its forward-looking vision. The website was conceived as a strategic platform: clear, authoritative, and built to support the evolving needs of a modern produce supplier.

In an industry where information is often fragmented or inaccessible, the site brings clarity and transparency to product sourcing and origin. It was designed to surface detailed, accurate information about where products are grown, how sourcing shifts seasonally, and the conditions that shape availability throughout the year.

The site was designed with a robust product inventory section that allows visitors to understand details about each product's origin, transportation and storage, and specific availability.

The design system supported their entire inventory — produce with single origins to ones with multiple origins, import cities and varying degrees of seasonality.

On desktop, this product inventory section was expanded to include an interactive map that allows users to easily see the product availability and seasonality of a product.

Philosophy

Substance over style, but never boring

All projects are unique, but some design principles are universal. I believe that distilling a brand down to its simplest form (from messaging to visual expression) is crucial to effectively communicate your message. From that foundation, more can be added to enhance the message, functionally and without pretense.
